Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition in which a person may experience extreme mood swings from really high highs (mania) to really low lows (depression). The following is a description of what a mania episode may look like as well as a depressive episode:
Manic Episode:
- Racing thoughts, easily distracted, elevated mood, feeling excessively happy, less irritable
- Feeling a surge of energy, not needing as much sleep or staying up for days
- An increase in cleaning, productiveness in other areas of life
- Excessive spending, drinking/drug use, gambling
- Risky sexual behavior
Depressive Episode:
- Feeling sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, tearfulness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all activities
- Sleep issues (either sleeping too much or trouble staying asleep
- Restlessness or slowed behavior
- Guilt or shame in loss of productivity
The individuals mood swings may not be triggered by anything or it may be triggered by the following:
- Stressful life events (posttraumatic stress)
- Seasonal changes
- Sleep disruptions
- Medication changes
- Relationship stress
- Work related stress
