Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing: Motivational interviewing is a counseling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. It is a practical, empathetic, and short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life changes. This intervention helps people become motivated to change the behaviors that are preventing them from making healthier choices.
MI can help when:
- Ambivalence is high and people are stuck in mixed feelings about change
- Confidence is low and people doubt their abilities to change
- Desire is low and people are uncertain about whether they want to make a change
- Importance is low and the benefits of change and disadvantages of the current situation are unclear.
MI can help with:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Diabetes control
- Diet
- Obesity prevention
- Physical activity
MI techniques include:
- Open-Ended Questions
- Affirmations
