In a Lull

Dear Mrs. Melissa,

Lately I have been struggling with finding a connection with my partner. We have been married for over ten years and have two children together. I love my partner dearly but with having two children, things have been kind of flat for a while. What do you suggest we work on to bring some fire back into our relationship?

Best,
In a lull

Dear In a Lull

Thank you so much for writing this week. Marriages all have ups and downs and so often it is reflective of what stage of life your children are in. In infant and toddler stage, couples are often exhausted from lack of sleep and chasing a little one around. In elementary school, exhaustion lifts and most couples find their way back together however in middle and high school, extracurricular actives can bring back exhaustion. Once college hits, freedom at last. So, what do you do in the meantime until the children are out of the house? You start dating at home. Here are a few examples of at home dates:

– Cooking together once the children are settled or asleep
– Watching a movie together once the children are asleep
– Sitting outside together talking about your day
– Planning a trip together (looking towards the future is very good for relationships)
– Play a board game, card game or video game together

With any relationship, going back to the beginning and figuring out what attracted you to each other is very helpful. Why did you fall in love with your partner?
