Dear Anxious E,
I hope this letter finds you well. Starting at a new job can be fun and exciting but it can also bring feelings of anxiety. Not specifically knowing your line of work makes providing feedback a little challenging, but I will give it my best shot.
First, let’s start at the beginning and recognize that you applied for, interviewed for and were awarded this job. That means that you felt confident and capable of handling this job when you saw the advertisement for it. Has your thoughts changed since then or is there a part of you that still feels like you can handle this job? I would focus on what drew you towards this job and what made you accept their offer.
Second, there are always growing pains with any new job. You have to get to know your new team (assuming you work with others), how everyone works, functions together and how you fit into the mix. Your new boss already thinks you are capable because he or she hired you. Now comes the exciting time to prove yourself. Will everything always go smooth, absolutely not but it is how you recover from the blips that truly matter. No boss expects perfection from day 1.
A couple of strategies to try include:
- Positive self talk (I can do this, I am capable of this, I am worthy)
- Look to new coworkers as mentors (ask questions, get clarification when confused, etc.)
- Be prepared for the first day and go in knowing about the company and everyone’s role
Finally, self-care matters. I would encourage you to get enough rest, eat well, take short breaks, and use calming techniques such as deep breathing to lower your stress. If anxiety becomes overwhelming or lasts for a long time, talking with a trusted person or a mental health professional may be helpful.
